3-D Construction: Beyond the Possible with Tony Serviente
Come learn from Tony Serviente, a seasoned glass artist who has developed a workshop that will defy what you thought could be accomplished in the kiln!
From unusual fusing configurations, 3D fused objects, pressurized air augmentation and more, we will push the legal limits of warm glass. This class will leave you with enough ideas to inspire you for a very long time! Tony has spent over 30 years, carefully, and often spontaneously experimenting. He harbors no secrets about any of it. While exploration is the theme of this session, the foundation of kiln forming strategies and problem solving will also be discussed. This class will be action packed with the possibility of many diverse samples, full days, and good caffeinated workshop sessions.
In this 5-day intensive, he will cover Vertical Fusing, 3-D Constructions, and Frit Sliding; all without casting, laminates or adhesives! Tony promises a unique experience.

I do what I do because I like to keep busy, make things, and explore this tiny corner of the universe. If I were not working with glass, I would probably be trying to play up-tempo bebop on my alto sax all day.
Glass caught my interest more than 30 years ago. I quit my job as an electronics technician in 1985 and opened my first studio where I taught, built commissioned work and repaired stained glass. In 1990 I went to two schools in the Pacific Northwest. I had the opportunity to learn from the father of modern warm glass, Boyce Lundstrom, and also to attend classes at Pilchuck where my eyes were opened to many other techniques such as etching, neon, glassblowing and torch work.
In the intervening years, I have incorporated many of these techniques into my work. With the help of talented, competent and good-natured people, I make a line of kiln formed vases, dishes, lamps and sculptural pieces that are sold nationally.
My studio is a cauldron of coffee, music, people, and various projects all surrounded by an energizing aura of glass.
The techniques of kiln working demand an attention to detail and methodology that appeals to the scientist in me, and allows for the kind of spontaneous expression that my artistic side craves.
Besides an extensive background in rote production work, I experiment with my own techniques that have allowed me to create kiln-formed shapes that defy convention. I also do commissioned work in stained glass and glass sculpture. I have taught for about 30 years and my students have come from all over the world and have ranged in age from first grade to elderly. I've taught at the Corning Museum of Glass for more than a decade as well as the Pittsburgh Glass Center, The Glass Underground and elsewhere. I love to teach because I learn so much in the process!
