Hats Off to Pate De Verre with Dori Settles
Message from the artist:
What happens when you fire a baseball cap in a kiln? In this hands-on five-day workshop, you'll find out — and walk away with the mold-making skills, color intuition, and pâte de verre technique to make glass tell stories in entirely new ways.
We'll ease into the week with small practice pieces that build the foundation: mold-making from scratch, loading glass frit and powder to build color and texture, and understanding how particle size shapes the final result. Then things get interesting. One of your pieces — The Impossible Vessel — will defy what you thought you knew about glass in a kiln: no slumping, no supporting core, just glass doing something it really shouldn't be able to do.
The week's peak challenge is the ball cap. Caps will be provided, and you can enhance your cap with patches, pins, embroidered insignia, or whatever personal doo-dads matter to you — they can become part of your design. The goal isn't a perfect replica. It's a glass object saturated with character, wear, and story.
Skills covered: mold-making, clay modeling (unfired), frit and powder application, color mixing and gradation, firing schedules, basic coldworking and polishing.
All levels welcome.
Your opportunities are endless after learning this technique!
